ISO basics
What is ISO 9001, and which businesses should pursue it?
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is the international standard for a Quality Management System (QMS). In plain terms, it is a set of requirements that helps a company produce consistent results — rather than good or bad depending on who happened to be working that day.
The standard does not judge whether your product is "the best". It looks at whether your way of working is controlled, traceable, and systematically improved.
Who should consider it
- Customers or partners are starting to ask for certification, especially in export and public-sector work
- Recurring defects, returns, or the same customer complaints coming back
- The team has grown to the point where each shift or site works differently
- You are about to scale up and want the system solid first
The process at a glance
- Prepare your documented system — write down how the work is actually done
- Stage 1 audit — the auditor reviews your documentation readiness and plans the main audit
- Stage 2 audit — on-site verification that what is written is what happens
- Close any findings — you get time to correct issues and submit evidence
- Certificate issued — valid for 3 years, with annual surveillance audits in between
How long does it take?
It depends mostly on documentation readiness. Companies starting from scratch typically need 4–8 months to prepare. Companies with a system already in place and audit-ready may need only 2–3 months from the start of the certification process.
